GSM crosses 100,000 subscribers on first day

Reliance Communications, an Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group company, crossed 100,000 subscribers on the first day of the launch of its service in Mumbai, the company said in a statement Monday.

'The high volume sales can be attributed to the company's aggressive strategy,' an R-Com spokesperson said in the statement.

The company is offering up to 100 percent savings to sub-Rs.300 ARPU (average revenue per person) mobile customers at a one-time subscription charge (including GSM SIM) of Rs.25.

The plan offers Rs.900 worth of talk time on local calls and SMS to any network that can be accrued by Reliance Mobile GSM customers in daily tranches of Rs.10 spread over 90 days.

Toshiba to use Cell processor for TV of the future

Japanese electronics giant Toshiba announced plans Thursday to use the super-fast Cell processor to power what it described as the "future of TV."

Toshiba, revealing the company's latest products and technologies at the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) here, said the high-end televisions would be marketed in 2009.

"Cell TV is going to use the Cell processor, the most advanced video processor," said Scott Ramirez, vice president for marketing at Toshiba America. "It's way beyond anything that's used in a television today."

"Actually Cell TV is not a TV," he explained.

"It's a set-top box," he said, with a 55-inch LED panel for the screen.

"The box is the future of TV and will be marketed in 2009," he said.

Ramirez said Cell TV has a "video recording capability like none other" and would be able to record six high-definition signals at once.

And an official release date, isn't set for Windows 7, though Foley hears third quarter 2009, and Microsoft will only officially say early 2010. Lenovo Group, the world's fourth largest maker of personal computers, is reportedly about to begin a restructuring platform aimed to increase the company's global presence. Earlier the company said that it was able to boost market share by acquiring smaller players, but after it failed to take over Gateway and Packard Bell, it became clear that such approach did not work.

The only big and successful acquisition of Lenovo in the recent years was IBM's PC business, which still mostly relies on corporate customers. Lenovo explains that because of this "over reliance", its global PC market share remains modest. The company did not manage to take over Gateway in the U.S. or Packard Bell in Europe and lost its No. 3 spot on the PC market to Acer Group, which commanded 12.6% of computer shipments in Q3 2008, according to Gartner market tracking company, just a percent point behind Dell (13.6%). Nokia stops making only WiMax device

The world's top mobile phone maker Nokia said on Thursday it had ended production of its only mobile device using the U.S.-centered WiMax technology, another blow for the struggling wireless technology.

WiMax has been competing for the status of next generation mobile technology, but has largely lost the battle to Long-Term Evolution (LTE).

"We have ramped down the N810 WiMax Edition tablet. It has reached the end of its lifecycle," said a Nokia spokesman. Nokia unveiled the model only nine months ago, while usually even the most trendy models have a shelf life of well over a year.

Canada's Nortel Networks Corp has said LTE will be the most likely upgrade path for about 80 percent of the world's existing mobile phone providers, with others going for WiMax.

Google's free code-hosting Web site for developers is being used to distribute malware, a security researcher said on Friday.

Google Code is a place where programmers can host projects and code. Along with the legitimate code are links to fake videos that direct users to download a missing codec, said Dave Marcus, director of security research for McAfee Avert Labs. The codecs turn out instead to be password-stealing Trojan horses and programs geared toward stealing financial information for identity fraud, he said.

"They're using it as a way to send out links or as a place to house their links and redirects because it's Google and obviously it gets highly ranked in the index," he said. "The bad guys look for services like this as a way to push out code."

A Google spokesman said the company has removed malware-distributing projects from Google Code and search results.

"Google works hard to protect our users from malware. Using Project Hosting on Google Code, or any Google product, to serve or host malware is a violation of our product policies," the spokesman said in a statement. "Using automated tools, we actively work to detect and remove sites that serve malware from our network. We have removed many of these projects from Google Code and from our search results. Additionally, we'll continue to explore new ways to identify and eliminate such content."

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office recently awarded Microsoft Corp.
its 10,000th U.S. patent. The invention, U.S. Patent No. 7,479,950,
applies to surface computing technology and outlines how users can
place real objects — anything from cell phones to their own fingers —
on the computer's tablelike display and the computer will
automatically identify the objects and track their position,
orientation and motion. This allows the objects to be associated with
data or media, like a specific collection of music or photos.

Curtis Wong, one of four co-inventors of the patent from Microsoft
Research, explains that there are myriad uses for the patented
technology in conjunction with Microsoft Surface computers or other
touch-screen applications. For example, a group of photos from a
particular vacation could be associated with a souvenir from the trip.
Placing the souvenir on a Microsoft Surface computer might initiate a
slide show. Rotating the souvenir accelerates or slows the playback
speed. Placing it on another area of the screen would "spill" the
photos onto the Surface display, allowing the user to edit, delete or
add photos to that collection with simple gestures.

Or a user might choose to associate a collection of party music with a
matchbox from a favorite music club. Placing the matchbox on Microsoft
Surface would cause all the album covers within that party mix to jump
out, so the user can rearrange the playlist. From there, she could
place the matchbox on a play button to hear the music, and then rotate
the matchbox to scroll through the other albums. She could also add
music to that playlist by touching related albums and "flicking" them
into the matchbox.

landmarks in the background. Searches for celebrities like 'Lil Wayne'
tend to fare better, but you'll still wind up with a number of MySpace
users who have photographed themselves dressed up as the person you
searched for. Like I said, it's a little weird - though it can come in
handy when you're only concerned with looking through your friends'
photos.

Tata communications to work with Polish

Tata communications has signed an agreement with Poland-based mobile
phone operator Play to route the latter's entire international call
traffic, it was
announced on Wednesday.

Play will implement Tata's voice termination product VTS Prime
Solution to manage customer call quality. VTS Prime allows mobile
operators to pass on the burden of ensuring high quality international
calls to another telecom operator.

"We chose to work with Tata Communications because of their extensive
network backbone and experience, which was well positioned to fully
manage and support issues our company was facing as a start-up

Why Kindle for iPhone Won’t Hurt Kindle

Some tech analysts are wondering if the free Kindle for iPhone
application will cannibalize sales of Amazon's Kindle e-book reader. A
BusinessWeek article suggests that Amazon's no-cost app for the iPhone
and iPod Touch may give consumers one less reason to buy the pricey
Kindle 2:

"'In an economy like we have today, I don't see people shelling out
hundreds of dollars for a device which replicates something they
already have,' says Bill Mirabito, head of e-commerce researcher B2C
Partners."

But while the Kindle 2 certainly is no bargain at $359, I doubt that
Kindle for iPhone will cut into Kindle hardware sales one bit. If
anything, the app may actually spur Kindle sales by introducing
millions of iPhone/iPod Touch users to the world of e-books.

By comparison, reading an e-book with a Kindle is a pleasant
experience. With its paperback-size proportions, Amazon's reader
displays a full page at a time. Its large, ergonomic buttons make it
easy to turn the book's virtual pages, and you can tap the screen to
access certain controls. And its non-backlit e-ink display is far
easier on the eyes than the iPhone's backlit screen, particularly if
you plan to read for an hour or two.

Furthermore, Kindle for iPhone is intentionally crippled. You can't,
for instance, access Kindle's blogs, magazines or newspapers. But
since iPhone users can get most of that content via the Web anyway,
that's probably not a major shortcoming.

that enables the live migration of SAP applications across remote IBM
POWER6 systems via cloud computing.

The technology, developed as a part of the European

specific business needs.

Cloud computing is an emerging approach to shared infrastructure in

Next firefox version bumped to 3.5

The next release of Firefox, code named Shiretoko and currently in
development, will be labeled 3.5 instead of 3.1 as it had been
originally planned.

According to today's Firefox meeting notes, the version bump aims to
reflect more accurately the many changes introduced since the release
of Firefox 3.0, the latest major release, last summer. These includes
several changes to tabbed browsing, significant improvements to web
standards compatibility, a deeply enhanced JavaScript engines, and
several new privacy related including an all new private mode that
allows users to clear all their browsing activities at the end of a
session.

The next beta, Beta 3, will still be labeled as 3.1 while all the
necessary changes are made on Mozilla's several development tools.

The code for Beta 3 is now frozen and builds are already being
produced. Final release is expected for next week following QA
procedures.

It also seems Beta 3 will not be the final beta as it was originally
thought, but a fourth beta should follow in the near future with a
chance of including some more new besides fixing the about 100 blocker
bugs currently identified.

HTC has been very successful in launching many new smartphone series

be privately stored in the Internet giant's online Docs application
service.

The problem was fixed by the weekend and is believed to have affected
only .05 percent of the digital documents at a Google Docs service
that provides text-handling programs as services on the Internet.

"We've identified and fixed a bug where a very small percentage of
users shared some of their documents inadvertently," Google Docs
Product Manager Jennifer Mazzon wrote in a message at the firm's
website on Saturday.

"We're sorry for the trouble this has caused. We understand our users'
concerns (in fact, we were affected by this bug ourselves) and we're
treating this very seriously."

The problem occurred in cases where people had chosen to collaborate
on multiple documents and adjusted settings to allow access to others,
according to Google.

Collaborators were unintentionally given permission to access
documents aside from the ones intended.

"As part of the fix, we used an automated process to remove
collaborators and viewers from the documents that we identified as
having been affected," Mazzon said.

Sony is considering legal action against The Gate, the advertising

If you haven't figured it out, the child is playing a video game with
a controller similar to those of Sony's PlayStation brand. Why is this
such an issue? The company who was in charge of the ad, The Gate, did
not seek permission from the gaming giant in order to utilize the
obvious likeness of its controller.

The Change4Life ad campaign has been started by the British government
in order to bring attention to the negative effects of a sedentary
lifestyle. The image, which depicts a young child playing video games,
gives off the impression that playing video games instead of going
outside may lead to an early death. A handful of other prominent
companies in the gaming industry have already spoken out against this
ad, including Sega, Atari, Future Publishing, TIGA, ELSPA and MCV.

It's not set in stone yet whether or not SCEE plans on going through
with legal action against either The Gate or potentially the British
government itself, but the image is definitely provocative from a
gamer's point of view. That's not to say we don't value exercise -- we
love our sports and physical activities as much as everyone else --
but gaming can certainly be part of a healthy lifestyle.

Apple releases iTunes 8.1 update

Apple updated its iTunes music jukebox and device-management software
to version 8.1 on Wednesday, adding support for the new line of iPod
shuffles released earlier in the day, and adding several other new
features, most notably adding Genius Sidebar support for movies and
television shows.

Apple first introduced Genius in September 2008 as a way for users to
create playlists and find new music based on what they are already
listening to. Now that functionality is available for movies and TV
shows as well, according to Apple. The Genius Sidebar will find
relevant videos much the same way it finds music. When you click on a
movie, iTunes will recommend new content that you may like from the
iTunes Store. (We were unable to verify this feature for ourselves,
though it's possible this feature will be enabled via a server-based
Genius update at a later time.)

In iTunes 8.1, the Party Shuffle feature introduced in April 2004 has
been rechristened iTunes DJ. While this feature has been around for
some time, Apple added some new functionality specifically designed
for iPod touch and iPhone users

Walt Disney Co. is taking the wraps off an advanced new car racing
video game that the entertainment company hopes will bolster its
success in the lucrative gaming sector.

As sales of video games prove relatively resilient in the economic
downturn, Disney is betting that it can prosper broadly from new games
that it makes on its own. Rather than licensing Disney content out to
game publishers, Disney's in-house gaming team wants to generate video
game characters and story lines that can be the basis of movies as
well.

"That is the Holy Grail for video games, to see them successfully
become franchises," Graham Hopper, head of Disney's game division,
told The Associated Press.

To that end, the company is investing in projects like the latest from
its Brighton, England-based Black Rock Studio, a car racing game
called "Split/Second" for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PCs, set within
the world of a reality television show.

With a release date of early 2010, the studio behind last year's
off-road racing game "Pure" has employed new graphics-rendering
technologies to pit racers against both the track and explosions
triggered by competitors. A sneak preview to the AP showed a race
track on an airport stage set, complete with an air traffic control
tower that can come crashing to the ground.

The title is part of Disney Interactive Studios' strategy of injecting
around 20 percent of its investment dollars into new

Also you can see by entering keywords in the region in the world with such terms searched in Google News stories of what the term.

For example, to know which OS smartphone currently "hot" in the India can be compared with different operating systems separated by a comma in conduct. Set the region and the India. Last 12 months period and see what operating system it sought was the most recent 12 months (with Google).

Besides this overview you can see much more. The trends by province, which sites are visited on the subject, etc. Really worth a look. So far this has nothing to do with mobile technology, but it is now!

Firefox for Windows Mobile still in development

They have been doing quite long, but Firefox for Windows Mobile (Fennec) is still in development.

Users of Firefox on the desktop are often very fanatical about their browser choice. Although the mobile world and Mozilla Firefox is currently not a significant role to play, there are many people who adopt look forward eagerly to the day that Mozilla is finally finished, stable version of Firefox for Windows Mobile (also called Fennec) comes in the market.

So far we do it here in early alpha versions. Now Mozilla has released Firefox Mobile Alpha 3: This is still a version that is suitable only for testing purposes, rather than as a daily browser on your smartphone. According to developer Brad Lassey has Alpha 3 as improvements to the program start faster, and the scrolling of the pages is a lot smoother.

Firefox for Windows Mobile was already a feature of Opera competitor copied. As with Opera Link, users can synchronize bookmarks between fact the desktop version of Firefox and the mobile version.

Vodafone and LG Electronics announce the launch of the LG GM750, a new Windows phone based on Windows Mobile 6.5 from 6 October. 3D TVs from Sony in 2010

Are you ready for real 3D video games? Well, even if you're not, Sony will still want you to buy one of their 3D televisions, which they are expected to announce today.

According to the Financial Times (via The Street), Sony CEO Howard Stringer is expected to announce 3D television sets compatible with the PlayStation 3 and certain blu-ray disc players for late 2010. During the announcement, Stringer will say that 3D television is "clearly on its way to the mass market through technology, distribution and content."

"As with high definition a few years back, there are a variety of issues yet to be addressed. But the 3D train is on the track, and we at Sony are ready to drive it home."

At least one video game will be poised to take advantage of the new technology as early this year. James Cameron's Avatar, which is due in November, will support 3D graphics with compatible setups.

Those who want to jump on that train will likely have to pay thousands of dollars, as is the case with any fledgling technology. The majority should be just fine with their standard high definition televisions for another several years.

icrosoft recently obtained a patent may undermine many of its competitors, including retailers of electronic books.

Originally filed in November 2004, the document in question is entitled "Methods to buy products through a customer portal. Custodians of the patent explains, so that the gate (the application) may carry a dedicated browser to perform a particular action, such as consulting or purchasing eBooks." To do this, the browser (the application) may be deliberately crippled to not only point to a specific page. Typically, the manufacturer of a machine wish to redirect the user, and only to his booth download.

The magazine EbookNewser believes that this patent would then be a threat to publishers of digital content such as kiosks e-books or specific applications (NYTimes). It has become increasingly common to pick the rendering engine of a browser and redirect users to a web page to perform an action through an application. Thus the patent could cover some practical applications of publishers of e-commerce (Amazon) or even streaming content playback.

It still remains to be seen what Microsoft has to do with these new rights of intellectual property.
